This section supplements the following portion(s) of the AIP: AD.
In order to improve the operational capacity of the airport manoeuvring area, optimizing aircraft control activities on the ground by using predetermined SATR for both departing and arriving aircraft at the airport, this AIRAC AIP Supplement aims at notifying the Standard Airport Taxi Routes (SATR) and SATR’s operational procedures at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (VVTS).
SATR and SATR’s operational procedures are established aiming to:
Replace taxiing ATC clearances that contain a lot of TWYs information, specifying a single taxi route for pilot to follow: For departure flights - from stands to holding points to line up on the RWY; For arrival flights - from the movement when aircraft vacating RWY to stands.
Reduce the time communication on occupancy due to taxiing clearances has been shortened.
Reduce the workload for both ATCs and pilots.
Reduce the risk of pilot confusion when controlling the taxi aircraft.
SATR and SATR’s operational procedures are applied in the airport manoeuvring area of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, which is the area used for aircraft take-off/landing and taxiing, including the movement area and apron, but excluding the areas designed for aircraft maintenance.
ATCs of the Tan Son Nhat APP/TWR.
Pilots of airlines having flight operations at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (except for pilots of charter flight, and flights that use follow-me car to taxi out/into stand and holding point to line up on the RWY).
Not applicable for Boeing B747-8 and aircraft operating at stands 72A, 78A, 82A.
Stand 84 is not applicable for the West D2 procedure.
ATC issues clearances for the pilots to taxi the SATR continuously to the holding point (for departing aircraft), to stand (for arriving aircraft) or taxi via the SATR and hold at another position appropriate to the operating situation at that time to avoid the risk of collision between aircraft, between aircraft and personnel and vehicles on the ground.
SATR are established from the stands to the holding point to line up on the RWY 25L/07R (for departing aircraft) and after the aircraft vacate RWY 25L/07R to stand (for arriving aircraft), pilots should pay attention to enter and cross RWY 25L/07R when receive clearances from ATC’s TWR.
SATR are established to maintain a flow of taxiing aircraft in a unified direction to ensure the regularity of flight operations between departing and arriving aircraft. In cases of taxiing in the opposite direction with SATR in use. ATCs issue clearances to pilot according to the published procedures at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
Depending on the actual operational condition, ATCs issue taxi clearances for pilots using SATR or specifically listing the name of TWYs (current procedure).
Pilots need to clearly understand the packing/docking chart and determine the SATR based on the runway-in-use (for departing aircraft) and the assigned stand (for arriving aircraft). When there is any suspicion or lack of understanding during taxiing, pilot must immediately stop and notify the ATC. At that time, ATC will issue taxi clearances for the aircraft by specifically listing the name of TWYs (current procedure).
When operation condition at the airport is acceptable, ATC needs to flexibly transfer communication before the aircraft reach the boundary between the two sectors to ensure the continuously taxiing of aircraft.
Some stands which have two SATRs for the same RWY, ATC will choose the appropriate SATR based on the current traffic situation.
In case ATC needs to adjust taxiing route of aircraft or requested by pilots, ATC will cancel the current procedures and issue a replacement taxiing clearances.
(Aircraft callsign) TAXI TO HOLDING POINT RUNWAY (number) VIA (SATR name), HOLD SHORT OF [RUNWAY (number) or TAXIWAY (name)].
Example 1: Aircraft at stand 71 taxi to holding point RWY 25L
ATC GCU 1: HVN123 TAXI TO HOLDING POINT RUNWAY 25L VIA WEST D1
Example 2: Aircraft at stand 25 under the control of GCU 2 taxi and hold short of TWY V before being transferred to GCU 1.
ATC GCU 2: HVN123 TAXI TO HOLDING POINT RUNWAY 25L VIA SOUTH D1, HOLD SHORT OF TAXIWAY V.
ATC GCU 1: HVN123 CONTINUE TAXI VIA SOUTH D1, HOLD SHORT OF RUNWAY 25L.
(Aircraft callsign) TAXI TO STAND (number) VIA (SATR name), [HOLD SHORT OF TAXIWAY (name) if necessary].
Example 3: Aircraft vacate RWY 25L via TWY S8 and are assigned to stand 91 can taxi continuously.
ATC GCU 1: HVN123 TAXI TO STAND 91 VIA WEST A1.
Example 4: Aircraft vacate RWY 25L via TWY S8 and are assigned to stand 25 must hold short of TWY S5 before being transferred to GCU 2.
ATC GCU 1: HVN123 TAXI TO STAND 25 VIA SOUTH A3, HOLD SHORT OF TAXIWAY S5.
ATC GCU 2: HVN123 CONTINUE TAXI TO STAND 25.
(Aircraft callsign) RECLEARED TAXI VIA (SATR name), [Reason or more information if necessary].
Example 5: GCU 1 issued taxiing clearance following SATR South A1 for pilot into stand 25, but then receive information from GCU 2 coordinate to follow SATR South A3 to avoid aircraft having to hold when another aircraft is pushed out from stand 37.
ATC GCU 1: HVN123 RECLEARED TAXI VIA SOUTH A3 DUE TO TRAFFIC, HOLD SHORT OF TAXIWAY S5.
(Aircraft callsign) CANCEL STANDARD TAXI ROUTE, TAXI VIA (specific taxiway).
Example 6: Aircraft are taxiing via the SATR West D1 when a problem arises that another aircraft cannot continue taxiing on TWY S. At this time, GCU’s ATC proactively cancels the clearance to follow the SATR and issues new taxi clearance for aircraft to taxi to another route.
ATC GCU1: HVN123 CANCEL STANDARD TAXI ROUTE, TAXI VIA TAXIWAY V, S1 TO HOLDING POINT RWY 25L.
There are 15 SATRs designed which correspond to commonly used departure and arrival procedures at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, these include: RWY 25R used for landing, RWY 25L used for take off and RWY 07L used for landing, RWY 07R used for take off.
